Modern Pop Rock
Grunge bands left behind the ozone depleting use of hairspray and leather jackets in favor of baggy cargo pants and flannel shirts with metal like distorted guitars. Along with the changes to fashion, new melodic ideas explored more tame tessituras with melancholy, introspective soul searching lyrics in a fresh display of prosody.
Soon after grunge electrified rock with its new sound alternative rock split from the main pop and rock scenes with more edginess to its sound than previous pop.
Another 90s fad became unplugged acoustic rock versions of the originally heavier, distorted versions of popular rock songs. Musicians proved that the songwriting was well crafted after stripping away the sustain of high gain, the filling pads and squeals of synthesizers, and highly produced techniques that polished original studio recordings. Turning in their electric solid body guitars and basses for acoustic ones, synthesizers for piano, and digital drums for real percussion demonstrated that these simplified versions of their songs still held up without any studio magic. This music honored the craft of songwriting with many songs The Matt McCallie Orchestra covers like:
